At the time we began work on BLCR there was no acceptable way to get
autoloading of BLCR. We considered using a device node rather than the
/proc/checkpoint/ctrl node we use now to get BLCR loaded as if it was a
device driver. However, at the time (early 2.4.x) there was no method
for dynamic device number allocation (at least not in widespread use),
and we didn't have any clout to request a static device number for BLCR.

We have not reexamined this issue, but I suspect that with a modern
kernel there should be a way to achieve autoloading of BLCR. Though I
don't expect to investigate further on my own, I'd be happy to work with
somebody who feels motivated to pursue this.
